Factors associated with adolescent obesity depending on COVID-19 economic adversity

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors associated with obesity among adolescents in South Korea depending on experience on economic adversity due to COVID-19.
Methods: This study used data from the 17th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2021) of the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention and The Ministry of Education, including 40,570 adolescents. All analyses performed complex sample analysis using SAS version 9.4.
Results: For male students, the factors commonly associated with the obesity were maternal education level, academic grade, smartphone usage time, stress, physical activity and dietary habit score. Factors associated with the obesity with COVID-19 economic adversity among male students were household type, living with family and depression. For female students with or without COVID-19 economic adversity, age, household type, maternal education level, and stress were the common factors associated with the obesity.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that community attention and policy support are needed to promote adolescent¡¯s health, who have experienced economic adversity due to COVID-19.
